Website Design & Maintenance
Helping You Communicate
We design and manage websites for both large and small clients. Our overriding principle is simplicity. The most important aspect of any business website is the message, not the messenger.
A truly effective web page contains only enough decorative elements to complement and enhance the information content. The user should not have to hunt for information or navigation links and should not be distracted by fussy layout or irrelevant items that have nothing to do with the content of the current page.
Sometimes our clients wish to include every latest fashionable bell and whistle. We try to dissuade them and usually succeed. But the customer is always king and sometimes there is no accounting for taste. Of course, that would never apply to you, would it?
We also aim to make the pages we create load as quickly as possible. Typical users are impatient and if your pages do not load within five seconds or so — at least to the point where the body text is available — they go elsewhere.
All our pages are now created using cascading stylesheets to control the layout. Unlike most other current websites, those we design no longer use tables to layout the pages and as a result the files are smaller.
This approach results in significantly reduced download times, while the user's browser does not have to waste time reading and formatting a maze of nested tables before it can put the page on screen.
One other advantage of this way of building web pages is that search engines are able to make a far better assessment of the content of the site and thus produce more relevant repsonses to queries.
For examples of websites created in this way, see the sites of the Hong Kong Gardening Society, Insignia, Silicon International, Telecom Research Project and Hong Kong Aviation Group and its subsidiaries.
How we work
All the standard work we do in-house and this is covered by our quoted fees, but if we are not able to meet a precise requirement ourselves—a specialised original graphic or logo, for example—we sub-contract this work to one of our team of independent experts after first obtaining your approval of a quotation for the work. This enables us to keep costs much lower than if we maintained full-time staff, equipment and office space to cover all possible needs.
Once your site has been launched we can offer a regular updating and maintenance service for a modest monthly retainer fee. The basic fee covers the first two hours of work in a calendar month while time above this is charged at a reduced hourly rate calculated to the nearest 15 minutes.
Writing, editing and translation
If you wish, for a modest additional charge we can include the writing or editing of original content to your specifications.
We can also offer translation of Chinese language content into English. This is subject to an additional charge for which we will provide a quotation for your approval before proceeding.
Your image
If you have an existing corporate style used in your stationery, brochures, etc., we take pains to reproduce this in your website within the constraints imposed by the medium itself. At the same time we endeavour to ensure that your pages will load quickly, are easy to navigate, and present the information in the most user-friendly format.
If you have yet to establish your corporate style, we can help you with that, too.
What does it all cost?
Clients invariably ask right at the start how much we will charge to build a website, edit text or provide any of the other services we offer. Before we can do this, we need a clear idea of what your project involves, its size and its complexity.
It is always best to spend some time thinking about your needs in detail and putting some specifications on paper before contacting us. The more detail you provide, the quicker we can give you an estimate of the cost. We usually arrange a meeting with a potential new client at an early stage and free of charge. This enables us to make the best assessment of your needs and advise you of any possible snags before you decide to go ahead.
No two website are alike, so a one-price-fits-all approach is not practical. In fact, you should be suspicious of any company that quotes a flat rate for web design. You may well end up with a site that is built to the same formula as others or that does not work properly or is a nightmare to maintain – or all these and more.
Examples
The following list contains links to websites of some of our clients. It is not comprehensive, but is intended to give some indication of the range of our work. Also, in some cases under our terms of agreement we may not reveal the identity of a client. Past and present clients in this category include some leading international telecom and transport companies.
- Hong Kong Gardening Society
The Hong Kong Gardening Society (HKGS)was founded more than a quarter of a century ago by a group of people who wished to hone their horticultural skills in the sometimes challenging conditions and environment of Hong Kong. It is one of Hong Kong's most active societies, with a very busy calendar of activities, many including site-visits both locally and in China. It also arranges more extended overseas trips and a large party recently took part in an expedition to see the gardens of Nepal
This website is mostly rectricted to HKGS members, only a few basic introductory pages being open to the general public. The members area includes an extensive and rapidly growing library of articles published over the years in the Society's monthly newsletter, as well as new articles especially written for the website. There is also a members' forum for the online discussion of topics of mutual interest.
The entire website is database-driven and the custom-built content management system allows Society officers to update and edit content online, manage member accounts and create new topic categories for the library as necessary. When the website was launched in October 2007 to replace an earlier one, members were automatically informed of the event in an email that also contained their computer-generated login user names passwords.
- INSIGNIA
INSIGNIA is the latest venture of our client Hong Kong Aviation Group (HKAG). Launched on 15 July 2004, it provides an exciting new range of services and facilities to business travellers flying with Metrojet, HKAG's private charter jet company.
We prepared this website from start to finish, including construction of the database that drives it, in nine days. We are now working on the private area that will be available only to INSIGNIA members. Here they will be able to book flights with Metrojet, select from a range of extra services available at various destinations, and keep their INSIGNIA account in credit.
- Silicon International
Ltd
This site for our client Silicon International Ltd was launched on 6 July 2004. This bilingual English/Simplified Chinese site is mostly database-driven, even pages with static content using databases for menu generation, insertion of images and other changeable features.
The site has a dual built-in content management system allowing company staff from two different departments to update those parts of the site for which they are responsible independently of each other.
- Hong Kong Aviation Group
One of our longest-standing clients, Hong Kong Aviation Group is Asia's leading business aviation company. Its helicopter and business jet charter divisions, Heliservices (Hong Kong) Ltd and Metrojet Ltd, are expanding steadily and their websites are continually evolving to reflect this. (See our note above about its newest venture, INSIGNIA.) The Group, which is part of the Kadoorie family of companies, also holds a major interest in the Hong Kong Business Aviation Centre at Chek Lap Kok Airport.
- Metrojet Ltd
Metrojet provides business jet charter services out of Hong Kong. In addition to destinations in the Asia Pacific region and further afield, it is in a unique position to facilitate point-to-point business flights to and between destinations throughout China.
The company also provides aircraft management, engineering, maintenance and hangarage at the Hong Kong Business Aviation Centre at Chek Lap Kok Airport. For information on the full range of services Metrojet offers, use this link to visit its website.
- Heliservices (Hong
Kong) Limited
Heliservices provides local business and sightseeing flights, charter passenger and construction services into China, plus professional photography and filming facilities and lifting and construction industry services throughout Hong Kong. Located at the Centre of Asian Studies at the University of Hong Kong, The Telecom Research Project is one of the region's leading independent research organisations specialising in telecommunications. Its website provides a vast and growing collection of research papers and links to information and research resources around the world.
- Six Circle Manufacturing Ltd
This long-established Hong Kong company manufactures a wide range of moulded plastic products at its modern factory complex in Shenzhen, just across the border from Hong Kong. In addition to its existing range, it also produces new lines to order, including the design and manufacture of the finished moulds. Its website is intended primarily for buyers to browse and order products and is easily updated by staff at the company's head office in Hong Kong's Central business district. Its customers include the retail trade as well as airlines, the hospitality industry, domestic and office accessory suppliers and dental practices.
- Alternatives to Violence
Project Hong Kong
The Alternatives to Violence Project and its affiliates is a world-wide group of charities that helps people to come to terms with and overcome violent behaviour. Since starting work in Hong Kong in June 2002, it has received a great response to its programme of courses and training workshops. We are proud to donate website development and maintenance for Alternatives to Violence Project in Hong Kong.
- Hong Kong Telecommunications
Users Group
We designed the website of the Hong Kong Telecommunications Users Group in 1995 as a companion to its monthly newsletter, which we founded and edited. We continued to manage the website until 1999, when the newsletter was discontinued. Although the website remained available, it had no regular maintenance and fell into some disarray while continuing to contain long-outdated material. In March 2005 we were asked to redesign the site from scratch. It now incorporates features that were difficult to implement ten years ago in the early days of the Web. Most of the site now runs off a central database. Pages can be kept up to date by HKTUG staff using a custom-built content management system that is easy and intuitive to use by non-technical personnel. The system is also designed to allow easy implementation of a Chinese language version of the site at a later date if required. Also in preparation at present is a closed members' area.
